Item WOMEN PARTICIPATION IN LIBRARY PROFESSION IN NEPAL: THEIR STATUS AND CHALLENGES(2008) Dallakoti, Min Kumari; Dr.Madhusudan KarkiAs there is lacking record of women library professionals, the title "Women Participation in Library Profession in Nepal: Their Status and Challenges" has been chosen. To full fill the above mentioned problem objective of the study is fixed. The objective of the study is to find out the consolidated number of women; their academic qualification, their status, challenges and their attitude towards the profession. This study has been described and analyzed the level of qualification of women that begins with an introduction of Library and Information Science and also provides some historical background of libraries. In the past library was regarded merely as a store house but now the concept has been changed and library is regarded as a service institution. The study gathers the entire professionals obtaining B. Lib. I. Sc. and M. Lib. I.Sc. Degree and working in the libraries throughout the country. Restricted by time and resources, this study doesn't include the male professionals and female Para-professionals. Literature related to women issues found in periodicals, journals books has been reviewed. Not surprisingly but sadly, it is found that women have been, in many ways suppressed. Ms. Durga Ghimire regrets the low number of women, participating in political and many other sectors in Nepal. Following this suite, Das Gupta, in his article, talks about the hierarchical discrimination in India against women's position in librarianship, where men occupy higher positions and women section head or lower. Like this Mrs. Nirmala Shrestha has been pointed out the Library Science Education trend in Nepal in her article entitled "The role of the Tribhuvan University in developing library and information science education: past performance and future commitment" where she has mentioned that education dropout trend is more male than female. In focus of study historical movement of both Library Science Education and TUCL, and evolution of modern library profession in Nepal have been briefed. At the same time, the status of women librarianship and their job satisfaction has been described in detail. The status of women’s participation in library and information work should be measured on the basis of positions they occupy, not on the number basis it’s because power, prestige and privilege are attached to the higher position and status. vi The study was conducted using a survey research method. Two set of questionnaire were prepared. One set is for library professional whether 28 questions are included and another set is for Chief Librarian that may be male or female which is divided in three sections. Three methods i.e direct telephone conversation, email and personal visit to the respondents were made for data collection. Data are collected from both primary and secondary sources. Eighty percent responded were participated. The data are presented in tables and graphs. This study found that the majority of women librarian has got permanent job, maximum numbers of women are in officer level, the maximum numbers of women are working in Academic Libraries easily oust the number of the women working in Public Libraries, Special Libraries and Missionaries Libraries. The study has covered altogether the 30 libraries. Surprisingly it was found that in Kathmandu University Central Library and Nepal Sanskrit University Central Library there are no professional women in library. In this research the status and working experience of women, their best things and challenges in the professions have been analyzed by tabulating data and providing figure. Most of respondents said that they are facing problems due to the traditional working style, and are unable to be recognized by mature of profession. In one hand this study presents the consolidated number of women in the profession and on the other hand it shows their position, problem and possibility, with recommendation and suggestions. The suggestions made by respondents are that traditional working style should be changed. It attempts to persuade us that now time has come to change the way we work adopting modern approach and technology. Min Kumari Dallakoti CDLIS, T.U., KirtipurItem APPLICATION OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN CATALOGUE AND INDEX: ITS RETRIEVAL ASPECTS(2008) Sharma, Ram Prasad; Rudra Prasad DulalThe thesis entitled "RESOURCE SHARING AMONG LIBRARIES OF KATHMANDU VALLEY: ITS SITUATION WITH REFERENCE TO ISIS DATABASE" in general based upon the current situation of resource sharing among the libraries of Kathmandu valley. Today, it is virtually not possible for any library, however big and rich; to acquire all the publications due to rapid rising flow of new publications. As well as libraries are collecting, storing and processing the same documents making huge investment of money, manpower, materials and time. Resource sharing is the best and effective measure to solve many of these problems and which allows productive use of the available information and knowledge sources between and among the entire libraries' network for the reading community. It is not known that how many libraries are participating in resource sharing activities in Kathmandu valley by using computer networks. CDS/ISIS library software is used by most of the libraries in Nepal. However these libraries have not maintained CCF, due to lack of consortia. The objectives of this study are firstly to find out the existing condition of resource sharing among the libraries of Kathmandu valley through the use of IT, secondly to find out the view of libraries and library professionals about resource sharing, thirdly to find out the views of library users regarding existing condition of resource sharing and lastly to find out the importance of CCF among the libraries for resource sharing through computer network. The study is limited to ten different types of libraries of Kathmandu valley. Tribhuvan University Central Library (TUCL), Central Department of Population Studies Library (CDPSL) and Public Administration Campus Library (PACL) are the academic library; Nepal National Library (NNL) is the National Library; Kaiser Library and Kathmandu Valley Public Library (KVPL) is Public Library; Social Science Baha Library (SSBL) and International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development Library (ICIMODL) are Special Library; Center for Economic Development and Administration Library (CEDAL) and Nepal Academy of Science and Technology Library (NASTL) are vii Research Library. The study is limited to those numbers of libraries which is using CDS/ISIS library software for creating databases and the data is collected within 7th April 2009 to 21th April 2009 through the questionnaire. In the context of Nepal, no studies have been carried out on resource sharing through computer network. So, the fourteen related international literature have been studied and most of the reviewed literatures are focused in topic. The study focused on the digital resource sharing especially bibliographic database and eresources which is easy to share among the libraries. Most of the libraries of Kathmandu valley are using ISIS library software. The population of the study is a number of those libraries which is using ISIS library software for creating database. Ten different types of libraries have been selected as a sample for the data collection. The selection of libraries is depending upon the nature, types and easy availability. The researcher has used a set of questionnaire including 18 questions, informal interview, and observation as his basic instruments of data collection. Different types of responses are found on the way of data collection. All of the responses are analyzed and presented diagrammatically in the form of table and then tabulated data are presented diagrammatically in the form of bar-diagram and pie-chart. Every question are analyzed and presented of this thesis and drawn out the findings. According to the objectives, the major findings of this study shows that all libraries are interested to provide resource sharing service but among the libraries have no any cooperation or agreement for resource sharing. 50 % of libraries are providing resource sharing facility through their website. But this is not formal way of resource sharing on the principle of co-operation among the libraries. Because there is no any library network in Kathmandu valley to coordinate between and among the libraries, only one library is using Delhi Library Network for resource sharing. 100% libraries have maintained bibliographic databases of their collections in computer and all of the libraries have known about CCF but only 70% libraries have used CCF for creating databases. 60% libraries have faced users request for resource sharing and also 90% libraries have faced users request for collection development. It indicated that users are known about resource sharing and they are not satisfied with the collections and services of the library. This is viii the age of IT so online resources are going to popular day by day in library professionals as well as users. All types of libraries are interested to provide online resources but they haven't produced their own e-resources. They are providing some of the international eresources like JSTOR, EBSCO Host, Emerald Insight, Wiley Black-well, AGORA, HINARI etc. which is free to use along with TUCL is also providing electronic Nepali Journals to the users. To provide effective resource sharing service to the users, firstly there is urgent need of library network to connect the libraries on the basis of co-operation or agreement. This is the age of IT so libraries should be focus online resources like e-books, e-journals etc. and also focus on e-databases of all the library collections. Every library should go ahead on the principle of co-operation to fulfill their users' demand in this information explosion age. The scope of this study has been limited to three special libraries related with Human rights Organizations such as AIN, INSEC and NHRC, which has tried to find out the existing conditions of their collection and services provided by library to their user. Twenty four related literatures are reviewed about the special libraries in chapter two. It has also tried to focus on the users need and the problems faced by these libraries for the solution and improvement. For this study users are studied. Personal interview have been made to the librarians and other staffs. Questionnaire method has obtained to take the primary data. The results of twenty questions are the primary data. There are altogether 225 users in the study group, among them only 68 in numbers or 30% had been taken among the population of this study. From the distributed questionnaires 63 were returned which are analyzed, organized, tabulated, calculated and has been converted into the percentage. According to the findings of the research, large numbers of user (68.2%) are seemed to be familiar with the library collection and 55.5% are satisfied with the library collection. Most of the users are found using reports of conference, project, seminar, workshop then newsletters and other reading materials. The users are seemed to be satisfied with the provision of computer facility in their library. All these libraries, computer is used to search information and create database. Most of the users (57.2) have indicated that reference materials are insufficient. About 51% of user are found using library daily, weekly, monthly and sometimes respectively. Most of the users visit library for current and updating approach. Most of the users are satisfied with the opening hour of the library. They are depended upon the staffs for searching the information. Large numbers of users are vii found familiar with modern information technology. Modern computerizing and online services are provided in each library. Physical facilities are satisfactory in all libraries. Large numbers of users (58.7%) are seemed to be satisfied with the services provided by library. Budget has not been allocated in appropriate rate in all libraries. Circulation service, reference service, display of new books, subject bibliographies, CAS, SDI service etc are most useful for users. So, there should be free membership system and book issue facility in the libraries. Budget should be appropriate to improve the collections and services of libraries. Inter library loan service should be provided for effective information supply to user.Item USERS’ STUDY OF THE INSTITUTE OF FORESTRY CAMPUS LIBRARIES OF NEPAL(2008) Dhungana, Archana; Dr.Madhusudan KarkiItem Public library movement in Nepal and status of four public libraries of Kathmandu district(2008) Anita BhattaraiItem Usage of online resources in library with reference to JSTOR and PERI(2008) Jagadish Chandra AryalItem Public library movement in Nepal and status of four public libraries of Kathmandu district(2008) Anita BhattaraiItem A study of Nepal collection of Tribhuvan university central library(2008) Kalpana KarkiItem A comparative study of community, private and public school libraries of Kritipur(2008) Seema Thapa(Giri)Item A study on deterioration of non- book material with reference to National archives,Nepal(2008) Pramila NepaliItem Present status of Nepal national library: a survey(2008) Sarita BhattaraiItem Women participation in library profession in Nepal: their status and challenges(2008) Min Kumari DallakotiItem User's study on institute of engineering Pulchowk campus library(2008) Bidya Devi ManandharItem Factors impeding information processing works in T.U. college libraries in Kathmandu(2008) Indra Prasad AdhikariItem A study on student's use of library resources and self-efficacy(2008) Nina Shrestha
