| dc.description.abstract | This thesis entitled “Role of community school libraries in cultivating reading habits” has been carried out to find out the methods adopted by the community school libraries in fostering reading habits among school children. The study also focuses on the current status of community school libraries and perception of library authority regarding role of libraries in promoting reading habits. In-spite of awareness of the importance of reading habits in enhancing language skills and acquiring cognitive abilities, most of the community schools of our country lacks well managed libraries which could play a crucial role in cultivating reading habits among students. Review of fourteen different national and international literature related to this issue has been done. The study delves into the various twelve community school libraries of Kirtipur municipality, focusing their current physical status, library collections, library facilities and various library activities. The primary data were collected through observation and interview which was analyzed qualitatively. Likert scale was used to analyze perception of library authorities. This study revealed that the community school libraries have allocated responsibility of school library to such personnel who do not have formal training and education of Library and Information Science. Library use was not found to be given priority by school administration. Library staff strongly agree that library can play vital role in cultivating reading habit among students. Educational programs such as quiz context competition, essay writing competition, debate competition, word-meaning competition, story writing and telling, art competition, poem competition were found to be organized annually that being an important motivating factor for the use of library.
